Social Media Vs. Traditional Media

“Social Media Vs. Traditional Media”

Not a new topic but some how causes a lot of debate whenever the two compare against each other.

We’ve been posting up videos of Dr. Vinton Cerf from Google and Ken Mandel from Yahoo! and it is no surprise that they are extremely supportive of social media… they are a technology firm after all! So to balance the opinions out, OgilvyOne Singapore decided to interview a journalist on his opinions about social media.

Jeremy Wagstaff is a Technology Commentator at the Wall Street Journal, BBC and Loosewireblog.com. With loads of experience writing on both traditional media and social media platforms, he is probably one of the best media neutral journalist to give us his honest opinions about social media and the effect it has on traditional media.

Key take outs from the videos:
1) Social media is starting to gain more respect and prominence among journalists.

2) Social media cannot be underestimated as a source of credible news.

I think social media shouldn’t be underestimated as a source of credible news.

I know of journalist who make use of online forums, social networks, blogs, and now twitter to get the latest updates in the community or around the world on what’s hot.

Many people always downplay the credibility of blogs… they have their strong reasons why… but i think blogs have their very good functions as well.

Unlike trad media, there’s no government, no editor, no major money conditions to influence the media and the writing.

And like trad media…. there are the really good ones like Reuters and BBC where their credibility is no in doubt…. blogs also function the same way too.
Obviously you do not read a dodgy blog and believe its ridiculous claims…

Reputation is key in reporting and it doesnt matter what media it takes place in.

Sorry trad media… but you guys better buck up faster with regards to social media.

    PEACE!

    Hi Manil,

Thanks for your wonderful comments on social media vs trad media.

Another good thing about social media is that it is extremely dynamic and people nowadays are craving for dynamic sources of news.

I like what you said about the reputation of blogs and comparing it to reputation of trad media. It makes absolute sense!

    Good stuff :)
